Embarking on a solo journey offers unparalleled freedom – you set your itinerary, pace, and experiences without compromise. However, venturing alone also means assuming full responsibility for unforeseen events. Securing comprehensive travel insurance is essential to ensure peace of mind during your adventure.

Understanding Solo Travel Insurance

Solo travel insurance is a policy tailored specifically for individuals travelling alone, distinct from group or family policies. It provides coverage for various scenarios, including medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost or stolen belongings. With a policy focused solely on your needs, you can customise your policy to align with your travel plans, adding options like winter sports or adventure sports coverage as necessary.

Why Solo Travel Insurance is Crucial

Travelling alone means you don’t have immediate support in emergencies. A robust solo travel insurance policy ensures you’re not left vulnerable. Standard coverage typically includes:

  • Medical Expenses: Covers costs related to unexpected illnesses or injuries, ensuring you receive necessary care without prohibitive expenses.

  • Baggage Protection: Safeguards against loss, theft, or damage to your belongings. As a solo traveller, you’re solely responsible for your items, making this coverage vital.

  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption: Provides reimbursement if unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut short your trip. It’s important to review your policy to understand the specific situations covered.

Tailoring Your Policy

Depending on your travel plans, you may need to enhance your coverage to ensure you’re fully protected during your solo adventure. At Covered2Go, we offer optional cover for winter sports, cruises, and sports and activities, allowing you to customise your policy based on your trip type.

  • Winter Sports Cover: If you’re heading to the slopes, this add-on is essential. It provides protection for medical emergencies related to skiing or snowboarding accidents, as well as piste closures, lost or damaged equipment, and avalanche delays. Standard travel insurance may not cover high-risk activities like skiing or snowboarding, so adding this ensures you’re fully protected against potential risks.

  • Cruise Cover: If your solo trip involves a cruise, this additional cover ensures you’re protected in case of missed port departures, cabin confinement due to illness, itinerary changes, and lost or stolen belongings on board. Cruise-specific cover is essential, as standard travel insurance often does not include these unique risks.

  • Sports and Activities Cover: If your adventure involves more than just sightseeing, this add-on is designed to cover a wide range of sports and activities, from bungee jumping and scuba diving to hiking and water sports. Some activities carry a higher risk of injury, and standard policies may not include them, so it’s crucial to check your policy and add the appropriate cover if needed.

By selecting the right add-ons, you can ensure that your travel insurance policy aligns with your itinerary, giving you peace of mind while you explore.

Choosing the Right Policy

Your ideal policy depends on factors like trip duration, destinations, and planned activities. Options include:

  • Single-Trip Insurance: Suitable for one-time vacations, providing coverage for the specific duration and locations of your trip.

  • Annual Multi-Trip Insurance: If you plan multiple trips within a year, this option can be more cost-effective, covering numerous journeys under one policy.

  • Backpacker Insurance: Designed for extended travel across multiple destinations, often including coverage for various activities and temporary work abroad.

Safety Tips for Solo Travellers

While insurance offers financial protection, practicing safety is paramount:

  • Stay Vigilant: Keep your belongings secure and be aware of your surroundings.

  • Limit Alcohol Consumption: Excessive drinking can impair judgment and increase vulnerability.

  • Plan Ahead: Research your destinations, understand local customs, and have a clear itinerary.

  • Emergency Contacts: Keep a list of local emergency numbers and inform someone of your travel plans.

Making a Claim

In the event you need to make a claim:

  • Contact Your Insurer Promptly: Inform them of the situation as soon as possible.

  • Gather Documentation: Collect all necessary evidence, such as medical reports, police statements, and receipts.

  • Maintain Records: Keep detailed notes of incidents and communications with your insurer.

Solo travel is an enriching experience, and with the right insurance coverage, you can explore the world confidently, knowing you’re protected against the unexpected.
