Travel Insurance for Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

Cover may be available for a wide range of pre-existing medical conditions following medical screening.

You’ll need a Covered2Go base policy and separate medical screening cover from Millstream. These can be purchased in either order.

Medical screening explained

How does Covered2Go medical screening work?

At present, arranging cover for a pre-existing medical condition that requires screening involves two separate purchases: a Covered2Go base travel insurance policy and separate medical screening cover from Millstream Underwriting Limited. You can complete these in either order.

The online screening link opens the Millstream medical screening website, so it is normal to leave covered2go.co.uk during this part of the process. Millstream underwrites Covered2Go policies on behalf of AWP P&C SA and runs the current Medical Screening Service. It will assess the information provided and confirm whether cover can be offered for the declared condition.

Part 1

Covered2Go base policy

Choose and purchase your base travel insurance policy from Covered2Go. You can do this before or after completing medical screening.

Part 2

Millstream medical screening

Declare the relevant conditions to Millstream online or by calling 0330 311 2648. You do not need a Covered2Go policy number to complete the screening.

Screening outcome

Review the outcome and pay

If cover can be offered, Millstream will confirm any additional medical premium or special terms. Once any required premium is paid, Millstream will issue your medical screening endorsement and reference.

Complete both parts before you travel

The order does not matter, but medical screening cover does not replace the Covered2Go base policy. For an accepted, screened condition to be covered, you must also hold the relevant Covered2Go travel insurance policy and have paid any required medical screening premium.

Start with either part

You can purchase the Covered2Go base policy or complete Millstream medical screening first. Just make sure both are in place before you travel.

What is travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions?

Travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions is a travel policy that may include cover for eligible claims connected with a condition you had before arranging the insurance, provided the condition has been declared and accepted where required.

Depending on the policy section, cover may include eligible emergency medical treatment and repatriation abroad, or cancellation and curtailment if an accepted condition causes an insured event. Limits, excesses, terms, conditions and exclusions apply.

If you’re aged 65 or over, you can also read about our travel insurance for over 65s, including the age limits for Single Trip and Annual Multi-Trip cover and information about declaring pre-existing medical conditions.

Medical cover at a glance

  • Some listed conditions are covered automatically
  • Other relevant conditions must be medically screened
  • Acceptance depends on individual circumstances
  • An additional medical premium or special terms may apply
  • Accepted conditions are confirmed in writing by endorsement

This is not private medical insurance

Travel insurance is designed for eligible unexpected events. It does not provide routine or elective healthcare abroad. Please read the Policy Wording for the full terms.

Which medical conditions do I need to declare?

With the exception of the automatically covered conditions listed below, you must declare all medical conditions for which you have received treatment, advice or medication within the last 12 months.

If you are uncertain whether something needs to be declared, contact the Medical Screening Service on 0330 311 2648 before travelling.

Conditions covered automatically

The current Policy Wording states that you do not need to declare the following conditions and they are covered for no additional medical premium:

  • Acid reflux or gastric reflux
  • Acne
  • Blindness or partial sight
  • Cataracts
  • Deafness or partial hearing loss
  • Glaucoma
  • Hay fever
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

If these are your only medical conditions, no medical screening is required. If you have any other relevant condition, that condition must be declared and screened. Always check the current Policy Wording, as terms may change.

What happens during medical screening?

Medical screening helps Millstream assess whether cover can be offered for each declared condition and on what terms. You can complete the process online or speak to the Medical Screening Service by telephone.

Provide your trip and traveller details

You will be asked about the trip and the people who need to be screened. A Covered2Go policy number is not required.

Answer medical questions

Provide complete and accurate information about the condition, treatment, advice, medication and relevant medical history.

Receive a screening outcome

Millstream will confirm whether cover can be offered and whether an additional medical premium or special terms apply.

Keep your endorsement

If accepted and any required payment is made, the medical screening endorsement confirms the condition and terms agreed. Keep it with your policy documents.

What should I have ready?

Have your trip details, traveller details and accurate information about your medical conditions, treatment and medication available before you begin. You do not need a Covered2Go policy number.

Can Covered2Go consider different medical conditions?

Cover may be available for a wide range of declared medical conditions following screening. Each traveller is assessed individually, so acceptance, price and terms depend on the answers provided.

Heart and circulatory conditions

Conditions such as heart disease and high blood pressure may be considered following medical screening.

Diabetes

Cover for diabetes may be available depending on the type of diabetes, treatment and individual screening outcome.

Cancer

Current or previous cancer diagnoses may be considered following screening, based on treatment history and current circumstances.

Respiratory conditions

Asthma, COPD and other respiratory conditions may be considered, subject to medical screening.

Arthritis and mobility conditions

Arthritis and other musculoskeletal or mobility conditions may be considered following screening.

Other diagnosed conditions

Other diagnosed conditions may also be considered. Complete screening for an individual decision.

Examples do not guarantee acceptance. Cover is subject to eligibility, screening, the premium paid and the policy terms.

What if my health changes before I travel?

If you receive treatment, advice or medication for a new condition that has not already been declared between the date your policy is issued and the first day of your trip, you must contact the Medical Screening Service immediately.

For Annual Multi-Trip policies, this also applies before booking an individual trip. If you are unsure whether a change may affect your cover, contact the service before travelling.

Report a change in health

The Medical Screening Service will confirm whether cover can continue on the existing terms or whether an additional premium or special conditions apply.

FAQs: Pre-existing Medical Conditions Cover

The current process involves two separate purchases: a Covered2Go base travel insurance policy and separate medical screening cover from Millstream Underwriting Limited.

Medical screening can be completed online through the Millstream website or by calling the Medical Screening Service on 0330 311 2648. You can complete the screening before or after purchasing your Covered2Go policy, the order does not matter.

You do not need a Covered2Go policy number to complete medical screening. If cover can be offered, Millstream will confirm any additional medical premium or special terms. Once any required premium has been paid, you will receive a medical screening endorsement and reference.

You may provide your Millstream screening reference to Covered2Go if you would like it added to our records, but this is optional. Make sure both your Covered2Go base policy and any required medical screening cover are in place before you travel.

Yes. You can complete medical screening before or after purchasing your Covered2Go base travel insurance policy—the order does not matter. Medical screening is arranged separately through Millstream Underwriting Limited, either online or by telephone.

If medical screening is required, make sure both your Covered2Go base policy and your separate medical screening cover are in place before you travel.

No. You do not need a Covered2Go policy number to complete medical screening with Millstream.

After completing the screening, Millstream will provide a medical screening reference. You may give this reference to Covered2Go if you would like us to add it to our records, but this is optional and is not required to complete either purchase.

Travel insurance that includes your pre-existing medical conditions may provide cover if an accepted condition affects your trip. This could include eligible emergency medical treatment abroad or cancellation where permitted by the policy terms. Your conditions must be declared through medical screening and accepted for cover. You will also need both the Covered2Go base policy and the separate medical screening cover.

If you do not declare a medical condition when required, claims connected to that condition may not be covered. It is important to answer the medical screening questions fully and accurately and to tell us about any relevant changes in health before travelling. Please check the policy wording for the full terms, conditions and exclusions.

Cancellation relating to an accepted pre-existing medical condition may be covered, subject to the cover level you choose and the policy terms, limits and exclusions. The condition must have been declared and accepted through medical screening, with both the Covered2Go base policy and separate medical screening cover in place.

Cover may be available depending on the condition and the outcome of the medical screening. You can complete the screening online or by telephone, and you will be told whether cover can be offered and whether an additional premium applies. In some circumstances, Millstream may be unable to offer medical screening cover.

Eligible emergency medical expenses abroad relating to an accepted pre-existing medical condition may be covered, subject to the policy terms, limits and exclusions. You must complete medical screening and purchase any medical screening cover offered, alongside your Covered2Go base policy, before travelling.

If your health changes between the date you buy your policy and your departure date — including new symptoms, tests, diagnoses or medication changes — you must contact the Medical Screening Service immediately. They will determine whether your cover remains valid, whether additional premium or conditions apply, or whether cover can no longer continue. Failure to report a change in health may mean you are travelling without valid medical cover.

Yes. Some common, stable conditions are covered automatically at no additional premium and do not require medical screening. These include conditions such as acid reflux, cataracts, IBS, PCOS, and others listed in your Policy Wording. If these are your only conditions and no other diagnoses apply, your pre-existing medical conditions cover is included without additional steps. All other conditions must be declared and screened.

Routine pregnancy and childbirth costs are not covered, as they are not considered medical emergencies. However, unexpected complications arising from accidental injury or illness during your trip may be covered, depending on your stage of pregnancy and policy terms. Cover does not apply to costs incurred during the period between 12 weeks before and 12 weeks after your estimated due date. Any pregnancy-related complications should be declared during medical screening.

No. Travel insurance is not private medical insurance and does not guarantee access to private healthcare abroad. Private treatment is only covered when there is no appropriate state-funded medical service or reciprocal healthcare arrangement available. The insurer may arrange transfer to a public facility where appropriate. In the event of a claim, unrestricted access to relevant medical records may be required.
