OVER 65S COVER EXPLAINED

What is travel insurance for over 65s?

Travel insurance for over 65s can help protect older travellers against unexpected events before and during a holiday. Depending on the cover level selected, this can include emergency medical expenses, cancellation, lost or stolen belongings and travel disruption.

Covered2Go does not offer a separate policy solely for over-65s. Instead, eligible travellers can choose from our Silver, Gold and Platinum cover levels, with both Single Trip and Annual Multi-Trip options available subject to the applicable age limits, eligibility requirements and policy terms.

Single Trip Travel Insurance for Over 65s

If you are planning one holiday, Single Trip travel insurance can provide cover for that individual trip. Covered2Go Single Trip cover is available for eligible travellers up to age 99, making it an option for customers travelling in their 70s, 80s and 90s.

A Single Trip policy can cover one holiday lasting up to 365 days, subject to eligibility and policy terms. The cover available depends on the Silver, Gold or Platinum level selected and can include benefits for emergency medical expenses, cancellation, baggage and travel disruption.

Annual Travel Insurance for Over 65s

If you expect to take several holidays during the year, Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance can cover multiple eligible trips during a 12-month policy period. Covered2Go Annual Multi-Trip cover is available for eligible travellers up to age 85.

Each trip can last up to 31 days as standard, with 45 or 60-day extensions available for an additional premium. Annual cover may therefore be worth considering if you travel more than once during the year and want one policy to cover multiple eligible holidays.

As with Single Trip cover, the benefits and limits available depend on the Silver, Gold or Platinum cover level selected, together with your age, destination, medical circumstances and policy terms.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS

Can I get over 65s travel insurance with pre-existing medical conditions?

Yes, cover may be available for a wide range of pre-existing medical conditions following medical screening. Having a medical condition does not automatically mean you will be unable to get travel insurance.

Each traveller’s circumstances are assessed individually. The cover available and any additional premium will depend on factors such as your medical history, age, destination, trip duration and the cover level selected.

Conditions that may be considered

Diabetes and high blood pressure

Heart and circulatory conditions

Asthma and other respiratory conditions

Cancer, including previous diagnoses

Arthritis and other long-term conditions

Why accurate medical information matters

You must answer all medical questions accurately and declare any conditions you are asked about during medical screening.

If a relevant condition is not declared and accepted, claims connected to that condition may not be covered.

You should also tell us about relevant changes to your health before travelling, in accordance with the policy terms.

Every medical condition is considered individually. Acceptance is not guaranteed and an additional premium may apply following medical screening.

AGE LIMITS

Can I get travel insurance if I’m over 70, 80 or 90?

Yes, depending on the type of policy you need and your individual eligibility. Being over 65 does not automatically prevent you from taking out Covered2Go travel insurance.

Single Trip cover is available for eligible travellers up to age 99, while Annual Multi-Trip cover is available up to age 85. This means travellers in their 70s and 80s may be able to choose between Single Trip and Annual Multi-Trip cover, while eligible travellers aged over 85 may still be able to obtain Single Trip cover.

Travellers aged 65 to 85

Eligible travellers may be able to choose either Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip cover, depending on their travel plans and circumstances.

Travellers aged 86 to 99

Single Trip cover may still be available to eligible travellers up to age 99, subject to medical screening, eligibility requirements and policy terms.

Remember: Age limits are only one part of eligibility. Your destination, trip duration, medical circumstances and the type of cover selected can also affect the insurance available to you.

IMPORTANT EXCLUSIONS

What isn’t covered by travel insurance for over 65s?

Travel insurance cannot cover every possible situation. The exclusions that apply will depend on the circumstances of your claim and the section of the policy under which you are claiming.

The following are some important examples, but this is not a complete list. Always read the policy wording and your policy schedule for the full terms, conditions and exclusions.

Medical conditions not declared or accepted

Relevant medical conditions must be declared and accepted where required. Claims connected to a condition that should have been declared may not be covered.

Travel against official or medical advice

Cover may not apply if you travel against FCDO, government, local authority or medical advice, including travelling after a doctor has advised you not to travel.

Known circumstances

Claims may not be covered if they arise from circumstances you knew about when the trip was booked or the insurance was purchased, whichever was later, where you could reasonably have expected them to result in a claim.

Uncovered sports and activities

Hazardous activities and sports are not covered unless they are included within your selected activity level and any required additional premium has been paid.

Alcohol, drugs or illegal acts

Claims resulting from excessive alcohol consumption, non-prescribed drugs, criminal acts or breaking applicable laws and regulations may not be covered.

Planned medical treatment

The policy is not intended to cover trips undertaken to obtain medical treatment or the cost of routine, elective or non-emergency treatment.

Check the full policy terms

Exclusions and claim requirements vary between sections. Read the full policy wording alongside your quote and policy schedule to make sure the cover meets your needs.
