Healthcare in Europe
EHIC / GHIC and Europe travel insurance
An EHIC or GHIC can provide access to state-provided healthcare in certain European countries, usually on the same basis as residents. It does not replace travel insurance.
What an EHIC / GHIC can help with
Access to eligible state-provided healthcare in participating countries, subject to the rules of the country you are visiting.
What it may not cover
- Repatriation to the UK
- Private medical treatment
- Lost or stolen baggage
- Cancellation or travel delay
- Personal liability
Check the latest official healthcare and travel advice for each country before you travel. An EHIC or GHIC does not provide the same protection as a travel insurance policy.
