Travel Insurance Explained

Understanding what travel insurance is and when to arrange it can help you choose suitable cover for your trip.

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is designed to help protect you financially against certain unexpected events before or during your trip. Depending on the policy and cover level selected, this may include cancellation or curtailment, emergency medical expenses, repatriation, lost or stolen belongings, travel delays and personal liability.

The cost of travel insurance can depend on factors including your age, destination, trip length, number of travellers, chosen cover level, optional protection and any pre-existing medical conditions declared.

Do I need travel insurance?

Travel insurance is not usually a legal requirement, but travelling without suitable cover could leave you responsible for unexpected costs. Medical treatment and repatriation from overseas can be particularly expensive, while cancellations, lost belongings and travel disruption can also result in significant costs.

It is generally best to arrange your travel insurance as soon as you book your trip. This allows cancellation cover to begin from the policy purchase date, subject to the policy terms, conditions and exclusions.

Consider arranging your travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday. Eligible cancellation cover begins from the date the premium is paid and the policy is issued, subject to the policy terms and conditions.

The travel dates shown on your policy should correspond with the dates you leave home and return from your trip.

Cover may be available for a wide range of pre-existing medical conditions following medical screening. You must answer all medical questions accurately and declare conditions where required.

Some conditions may be covered automatically when the Policy Wording requirements are met. Other conditions must be screened and accepted, and an additional medical premium or special terms may apply. Relevant changes in health must also be reported before travelling.

No. A valid GHIC or EHIC may provide access to eligible state-provided healthcare in participating countries, but it does not replace travel insurance.

A GHIC or EHIC will not normally cover private medical treatment, emergency repatriation to the UK, cancellation, lost belongings, travel disruption or personal liability. When travelling in Europe, it can be sensible to carry both a valid GHIC or EHIC and suitable travel insurance.

Read our GHIC information before travelling.

Yes. Covered2Go Single Trip Travel Insurance is available for eligible travellers up to age 99, while Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance is available up to age 85.

Maximum ages and trip durations are subject to eligibility, policy terms and any required medical screening. You must provide complete and accurate information when obtaining your quote.

If your holiday includes a cruise, you should select Cruise Cover when obtaining your quote. Standard travel insurance may not include benefits designed specifically for cruise holidays.

Cruise Cover is available for an additional premium and can include benefits for eligible missed port departures, cabin confinement, cruise interruption and other cruise-specific events. Check that Cruise Cover appears on your policy schedule before travelling.

Depending on the policy and cover level selected, travel insurance may provide cover for cancellation or curtailment, emergency medical expenses, repatriation, baggage and personal belongings, travel delays, missed departure and personal liability.

Additional protection may be required for cruises, winter sports, golf and certain sports or activities. Benefit limits, excesses, terms, conditions and exclusions apply.

You can compare Covered2Go cover levels to review the available benefits and limits.

Single Trip Travel Insurance may be suitable if you need cover for one holiday. Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance covers multiple eligible trips during a 12-month policy period and may be more convenient if you expect to travel several times.

Consider your destination, trip duration, age, planned activities, required benefit limits and the overall cost when comparing your options. Cruise, Winter Sports and other optional protection must be selected where required.
