Cruise cover explained

How does Covered2Go Cruise Travel Insurance work?

Cruise Cover extends eligible Covered2Go Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance for cruise holidays. If your trip includes a cruise, you must select Cruise Cover and pay the required additional premium. No cover is provided for a cruise trip unless Cruise Cover has been selected and paid for.

Select “Cruise Cover” under “Add optional cover (if required)” when entering your trip details. Before travelling, check that Cruise Cover and the correct geographical area and travel dates are shown on your Certificate of Insurance.

Part 1

Choose your base policy

Choose Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance and compare the Silver, Gold and Platinum cover levels.

Part 2

Add Cruise Cover

If your trip includes a cruise, select Cruise Cover while entering your trip details, so your cruise holiday is included in your cover.

Before you travel

Check your documents

Check that Cruise Cover and the correct geographical area and travel dates are shown on your Certificate of Insurance.

Your main policy and Cruise Cover work together

Cruise Cover is not a standalone policy. To cover a cruise holiday, you need eligible Covered2Go travel insurance with Cruise Cover selected, paid for and shown on your Certificate of Insurance.

Planning a cruise?

Tell us where you’re travelling and choose the geographical area that covers every country on your trip. If your cruise visits countries in more than one geographical area, select the option that covers them all. Then select Cruise Cover before getting your quote.

What is Cruise Travel Insurance?

Cruise Travel Insurance combines an eligible Covered2Go travel insurance policy with Cruise Cover. Cruise Cover extends the main policy for cruise holidays and includes benefits for specified cruise-related events.

A cruise is a trip on an ocean, sea or river vessel used for both accommodation and transportation. Ferry crossings are not cruises. The destinations, stopovers and full trip duration must fall within the geographical area and dates shown on your Certificate of Insurance.

Cruise Cover at a glance

  • Available with Silver, Gold and Platinum
  • Required for eligible ocean, sea and river cruise trips
  • Cruise-specific benefit limits vary by cover level
  • Must be selected, paid for and shown on your Certificate of Insurance

Do I need Cruise Cover for a cruise holiday?

Yes. If your trip meets the policy definition of a cruise, Cruise Cover must be selected, the additional premium must be paid and the cover must appear on your Certificate of Insurance. Otherwise, no cover is provided for the cruise trip.

What can Cruise Cover include?

Depending on whether you choose Silver, Gold or Platinum cover, the Cruise Cover extension can include the following maximum benefits. Each claim must meet the applicable policy definition, conditions and evidence requirements.

Up to £1,500

Missed port departure

Eligible additional travel expenses to reach the next overseas port if an insured transport delay causes you to miss your outward cruise departure.

Up to £1,000

Skipped port benefit

A benefit for eligible ports your cruise operator cannot dock at because of adverse weather or timetable restrictions.

Up to £2,000

Low or high water

A benefit for eligible river-cruise disruption where water levels lead to land-based accommodation or a required change of ship.

Wider benefits from your main policy

  • Up to £10 million emergency medical expenses
  • Up to £10,000 cancellation and curtailment
  • Up to £5,000 baggage and personal belongings
  • Cover for eligible travel delay and missed departure
  • Up to £10,000 End Supplier Failure

Maximum benefits shown are available on selected cover levels. Cruise Cover extends the main policy and must be selected and paid for before a cruise trip is covered. Sub-limits, evidence requirements, excesses, terms, conditions and exclusions apply.

Cruise-specific benefits explained

Cruise Cover is designed for specified events that can arise during a cruise holiday. The following summaries do not replace the full Policy Wording.

Missed and skipped ports

Missed port departure can cover eligible travel expenses to reach the next overseas port following an insured transport delay. Skipped port benefit applies where adverse weather or timetable restrictions prevent docking at a scheduled port.

Cabin confinement

A benefit may be payable if illness or injury confines you to your cabin or requires you to remain in a state hospital as an in-patient during the trip. Written confirmation is required.

Cruise attire

Cover can apply if your own eligible formal cruise attire is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed, or is delayed for at least 24 hours on the outward journey. Item limits and evidence requirements apply.

Shore excursions

Cover can apply to eligible unrecoverable pre-paid excursion costs if illness or injury prevents you from taking part, or if the ship cannot make the scheduled port stop.

Cruise interruption

Eligible additional travel expenses may be covered if treatment on land is required because of illness or injury and you need to reach the next port to re-join your cruise.

River cruises and denied boarding

Low or high water benefit can apply to specified river-cruise disruption. Additional expenses may also be covered if suspected contagious disease leads the cruise operator to deny boarding.

Can Cruise Cover apply to different types of cruises?

Cruise Cover may be available for a range of eligible ocean, sea and river cruise holidays. Your complete itinerary, trip duration, destinations and planned activities must meet the policy requirements. A ferry crossing on its own is not classed as a cruise.

Ocean cruises

Cover may be available for eligible ocean cruises in Europe and worldwide, provided the correct geographical area is selected.

River cruises

Eligible river cruises can be covered, with a specific benefit available for certain disruption caused by insufficient or excess water levels.

World cruises

For longer cruises, check that every destination and stopover is included and that the full journey falls within the maximum trip duration available to you.

Expedition cruises

The cruise itinerary may be eligible, but shore activities or expedition elements can have separate requirements or exclusions. Check each planned activity before purchasing.

Check every destination and activity

Select a geographical area that includes every country and relevant stopover. Cruise Cover does not automatically cover every shore activity; separate Sports and Activities cover may be required, and some activities are excluded.

Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip Cruise Travel Insurance?

The right policy will usually depend on the duration of your cruise and how many other holidays you expect to take during the year.

Explore Single Trip cover

Several holidays

Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance

Cover for multiple eligible trips during a 12-month policy period. Each trip can last up to 31 days as standard, with optional 45 or 60-day extensions. Cover is available up to age 85, subject to eligibility.

Explore Annual Multi-Trip cover

Check the complete cruise duration

Your full trip must fall within the maximum duration shown on your Certificate of Insurance. Annual Multi-Trip cover may not be suitable for a cruise that exceeds the maximum duration available for each individual trip.

Cruise Travel Insurance with pre-existing medical conditions

Cover may be available for a wide range of pre-existing medical conditions. Some conditions are covered automatically when the Policy Wording requirements are met, while other relevant conditions require separate medical screening through Millstream Underwriting Limited.

At present, customers who require screening need a Covered2Go base travel insurance policy and separate Millstream medical screening cover. You can complete these in either order, and you do not need a Covered2Go policy number to begin screening.

Older cruise travellers can also find information about age limits and medical screening on our Over-65s Travel Insurance page. Cover remains subject to eligibility, medical screening where required and the applicable policy terms.

Covered2Go base policy and Cruise Cover

Arrange your base travel policy and select and pay for Cruise Cover if your trip includes a cruise. Your Covered2Go policy can be purchased before or after medical screening.

Separate Millstream medical screening

Declare relevant conditions online or by telephone. If cover can be offered, any additional medical premium is paid separately to Millstream.

Read how medical screening works

Where screening is required, both your Covered2Go base policy and separate medical screening cover must be in place before you travel. Make sure any additional medical premium has been paid and keep your screening endorsement with your policy documents.

FAQ: Cruise Travel Insurance

Yes. If your trip meets the policy definition of a cruise, Cruise Cover must be selected and the required additional premium must be paid. No cover is provided for the cruise trip unless Cruise Cover is shown on your Certificate of Insurance.

A cruise is a trip on an ocean, sea or river vessel that is used for both accommodation and transportation. Ferry crossings are not classed as cruises.

Cruise Cover can include benefits for eligible missed port departure, skipped ports, cabin confinement, cruise attire, delayed cruise attire, shore excursions, cruise interruption, disruption caused by low or high water and denied boarding expenses.

The available limits depend on whether you choose Silver, Gold or Platinum cover. Cruise Cover extends your main Covered2Go travel insurance policy and is not a standalone policy. Benefit limits, excesses, evidence requirements, terms, conditions and exclusions apply.

When entering your trip details, select “Cruise Cover” under “Add optional cover (if required)” before getting your quote. You can then compare the Silver, Gold and Platinum options and pay for your chosen policy and Cruise Cover.

Once you have purchased your policy, check that Cruise Cover is shown correctly on your Certificate of Insurance. If it is not shown, contact Covered2Go before travelling.

Choose the geographical area that covers every country you will visit during your trip. If your cruise visits countries in more than one geographical area, select the option that covers them all.

Your destinations, relevant stopovers and full trip duration must fall within the geographical area and dates shown on your Certificate of Insurance. If you are unsure which area to select, contact Covered2Go before purchasing.

Yes. Cruise Cover can be selected with eligible Silver, Gold and Platinum Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip policies.

Single Trip cover may be suitable for one cruise holiday, while Annual Multi-Trip cover may be suitable if you expect to take several eligible trips during the year. Check that the full duration of your cruise falls within the maximum trip length available under your chosen policy.

Cover may be available for a range of pre-existing medical conditions. Some conditions are covered automatically when the Policy Wording requirements are met. Other relevant conditions must be declared through the separate Millstream Medical Screening Service.

You can purchase your Covered2Go policy and complete medical screening in either order, and you do not need a Covered2Go policy number to begin screening. If cover is offered, any additional medical premium is paid separately to Millstream. Make sure your policy, Cruise Cover and any required medical screening cover are all in place before travelling.

Missed Port Departure cover can provide eligible additional travel expenses to reach the next overseas port if an insured transport delay causes you to miss your outward cruise departure.

Skipped Port Benefit may provide a payment when adverse weather or timetable restrictions prevent the cruise ship from docking at a scheduled port. Cover limits vary between Silver, Gold and Platinum, and supporting evidence from the cruise operator or transport provider may be required.

Cruise Cover can cover eligible, unrecoverable pre-paid shore-excursion costs if illness or injury prevents you from taking part, or if the cruise ship is unable to make the scheduled port stop.

The event must meet the applicable policy terms, and supporting evidence may be required. Cruise Cover does not automatically cover every activity undertaken during a shore excursion, so check whether separate Sports and Activities cover is needed.
