Winter Sports Cover explained

How does Covered2Go Winter Sports Travel Insurance work?

Winter Sports Cover extends eligible Covered2Go Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance for specified skiing, snowboarding and winter-sports risks. Cover for skiing and snowboarding applies only when the appropriate additional premium has been paid and the cover is shown on your Certificate of Insurance.

When entering your trip details, select “Winter Sports” under “Add optional cover (if required)”. You must also make sure every planned sport or activity is included at the appropriate Sports and Activities level. The Winter Sports extension benefits apply when Sports and Activities Level 3 or 4 is selected.

Part 1

Choose your base policy

Choose Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance and compare the Silver, Gold and Platinum cover levels.

Part 2

Add Winter Sports Cover

Select Winter Sports and make sure your planned skiing, snowboarding or other activity is included at the correct Sports and Activities level.

Before you travel

Check your documents

Check that your travellers, dates, geographical area, Winter Sports Cover and applicable activity level are shown correctly on your Certificate of Insurance.

Your main policy and Winter Sports Cover work together

Winter Sports Cover is not a standalone policy. Your main Covered2Go policy provides the wider benefits available with your chosen cover level, while the Winter Sports extension provides the specified equipment, hire, pack and piste-closure benefits described below.

Heading to the slopes?

Choose the geographical area that covers every country on your trip, select Winter Sports and check that all planned activities are included before getting your quote.

What is Winter Sports Travel Insurance?

Winter Sports Travel Insurance combines an eligible Covered2Go travel insurance policy with Winter Sports Cover and the appropriate Sports and Activities level. It is intended for eligible skiing, snowboarding and other listed winter activities.

Depending on the cover level selected, the extension can provide benefits for winter sports equipment, replacement equipment hire, an unused winter sports pack and eligible piste closure. The destinations, dates and activities must all meet the policy requirements.

What can Winter Sports Cover include?

Depending on whether you choose Silver, Gold or Platinum, the Winter Sports extension can include the following maximum benefits. Each claim must meet the applicable definition, conditions and evidence requirements.

Winter Sports benefits explained

The Winter Sports extension is designed for specified events connected with eligible winter-sports holidays. These summaries do not replace the full Policy Wording.

Winter sports equipment

Eligible own or hired skis, bindings, ski boots, ski poles, snowboards and specialised clothing may be covered if lost, stolen or damaged. Depreciation and the applicable single-item limit apply. For equipment more than five years old, the maximum payable is £50.

Replacement equipment hire

Reasonable hire costs may be covered until your equipment is returned or for the remainder of the trip if it is lost, stolen or damaged, or delayed for more than 12 hours on the outward journey.

Winter sports pack

The eligible unused portion of ski school, a resort or lift pass and winter sports equipment hire may be covered, limited to £150 per week, if illness or an accident prevents participation or if a lift pass is lost or stolen.

Piste closure

If all on-piste skiing at your pre-booked resort is unavailable because of lack of snow, excessive snow or avalanche conditions, the policy can pay up to £15 per day towards transport to another resort or £25 per full day for total closure, subject to the overall limit.

Keep supporting evidence

Claims may require reports from the police, resort management, tour operator, airline, transport provider, hire company, medical practitioner or specialist dealer, together with receipts or proof of ownership where applicable.

Which winter sports activities can be covered?

The Policy Wording places different sports and activities into Levels 1 to 4. Select the level required for the highest-rated activity you plan to undertake and check every applicable special condition and exclusion.

Level 3 examples

Conventional skiing and snowboarding

The current list includes conventional skiing and snowboarding, snowblading, dry-slope skiing or snowboarding and cross-country or Nordic skiing on marked trails at Level 3, subject to the stated conditions and exclusions.

Level 4 examples

Higher-risk winter activities

Certain activities such as skiing or snowboarding in a terrain park, snow biking, snow kiting, snowmobiling and bobsleigh are listed at Level 4. Special conditions apply and some policy sections are excluded while taking part.

Other examples

Ice skating and glacier walking

Other winter activities can sit at lower levels. For example, indoor ice skating and outdoor skating on a commercially managed rink are listed at Level 1, while glacier walking is listed at Level 2 with a special condition.

Important skiing and snowboarding conditions

  • Follow the International Ski Federation code and the resort regulations.
  • Off-piste skiing is excluded unless it is within the ski-area boundaries of a recognised resort and follows ski-patrol guidelines.
  • Competitions, freestyle skiing or snowboarding, jumping, ski-flying, acrobatics, stunting, racing, national-squad training and the use of skeletons are excluded.

Examples do not guarantee cover. Activity levels, special conditions and excluded policy sections can change the cover available. Always check the current Policy Wording for your exact activity.

Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip Winter Sports Travel Insurance?

The right policy will usually depend on the length of your winter-sports holiday and how many other eligible trips you expect to take during the year.

One winter holiday

Single Trip Travel Insurance

Cover for one specific journey. Add Winter Sports Cover and the appropriate Sports and Activities level for the skiing, snowboarding or other listed activities planned during that trip.

Explore Single Trip cover

Several holidays

Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance

Cover for multiple eligible trips during the policy year. When the appropriate premium is paid and cover is shown on your Certificate of Insurance, skiing and snowboarding can be covered for up to 30 days in total during the period of insurance.

Check the activity duration

Make sure the duration of your planned winter-sports activities is within the limits shown on your Certificate of Insurance. Annual Multi-Trip skiing and snowboarding is limited to 30 days in total during the policy period.

Winter Sports Travel Insurance with pre-existing medical conditions

Cover may be available for a range of pre-existing medical conditions. Some conditions are covered automatically when the Policy Wording requirements are met, while other relevant conditions require separate medical screening through Millstream Underwriting Limited.

At present, customers who require screening need a Covered2Go base travel insurance policy and separate Millstream medical screening cover. You can complete these in either order, and you do not need a Covered2Go policy number to begin screening.

Covered2Go policy and Winter Sports Cover

Arrange your main travel policy, select Winter Sports and include the appropriate activity level. Your Covered2Go policy can be purchased before or after medical screening.

Separate Millstream medical screening

Declare relevant conditions online or by telephone. If cover can be offered, any additional medical premium is paid separately to Millstream.

Read how medical screening works

Where screening is required, your Covered2Go policy, Winter Sports Cover, the appropriate activity level and separate medical screening cover must all be in place before you travel. Make sure any additional medical premium has been paid.

Winter Sports Travel Insurance FAQs

Standard travel insurance does not necessarily cover skiing, snowboarding or the associated winter-sports risks.

For skiing or snowboarding to be covered by Covered2Go, you must select Winter Sports Cover, pay the required premium and ensure the appropriate Sports and Activities level is shown on your Certificate of Insurance.

Select “Winter Sports” under “Add optional cover (if required)” when entering your trip details. It is generally sensible to arrange your insurance as soon as you have booked your holiday so eligible cancellation cover can begin in accordance with the policy dates.

Depending on whether you choose Silver, Gold or Platinum, Winter Sports Cover can include:

  • Winter sports equipment: £500 with Silver or Gold and £1,500 with Platinum
  • Replacement equipment hire: £300 with Silver or Gold and £1,500 with Platinum
  • Winter sports pack: £300 with Silver or Gold and £1,500 with Platinum
  • Piste closure: £300 with Silver or Gold and £500 with Platinum

Your main policy may also provide wider benefits, including emergency medical expenses, search and rescue, cancellation, curtailment and baggage cover.

Benefit limits, excesses, definitions, evidence requirements, terms, conditions and exclusions apply.

Sports and activities are placed into different levels. You must select the level required for the highest-rated activity you intend to undertake.

Examples include:

  • Conventional skiing and snowboarding – Level 3
  • Snowblading – Level 3
  • Dry-slope skiing or snowboarding – Level 3
  • Cross-country or Nordic skiing on marked trails – Level 3
  • Sledding and tobogganing on snow – Level 3
  • Terrain-park skiing or snowboarding – Level 4
  • Snow biking – Level 4
  • Snow kiting – Level 4
  • Snowmobiling – Level 4

Special conditions and excluded policy sections can apply to individual activities. Check the current Policy Wording for every activity you plan to undertake.

Off-piste skiing is excluded unless you are skiing within the ski-area boundaries of a recognised resort and following ski-patrol guidelines.

You do not have to be accompanied by a guide when undertaking conventional skiing or snowboarding, but you must follow the International Ski Federation code and the resort regulations.

Competitions, freestyle skiing or snowboarding, jumping, ski-flying, acrobatics, stunting, racing, national-squad training and the use of skeletons are excluded.

Winter Sports Cover can provide eligible cover for your own or hired winter sports equipment if it is lost, stolen or damaged during your trip.

Equipment limits are £500 with Silver or Gold and £1,500 with Platinum. Depreciation and the applicable single-item limit apply. For equipment more than five years old, the maximum payable is £50.

Replacement hire costs may also be covered if your equipment is lost, stolen, damaged or delayed for more than 12 hours on your outward journey. Replacement-hire limits are £300 with Silver or Gold and £1,500 with Platinum.

Claims may require proof of ownership, receipts and reports or confirmation from the police, resort management, tour operator, hire company, airline or specialist dealer.

Piste-closure cover may apply when on-piste skiing at your pre-booked resort is unavailable because of a lack of snow, excessive snow or avalanche conditions.

Subject to the overall cover limit, the policy can provide:

  • Up to £15 per day towards transport to another resort; or
  • £25 per full day when all on-piste skiing at the resort is completely closed

The overall limits are £300 with Silver or Gold and £500 with Platinum.

You must obtain confirmation from the resort management stating why the pistes were closed and how long the closure lasted.

Yes. You can choose Single Trip Travel Insurance for one specific winter-sports holiday or Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance for several eligible trips during the policy year.

For Annual Multi-Trip policies, skiing and snowboarding can be covered for up to 30 days in total during the period of insurance, provided the appropriate premium has been paid and the cover is shown on your Certificate of Insurance.

Check that the duration of your planned winter-sports activities is within the limit shown on your documents.

No. A valid GHIC or EHIC may provide access to medically necessary state healthcare in participating countries, but it is not a replacement for travel insurance.

A GHIC or EHIC does not normally cover mountain rescue, private medical treatment, medical repatriation to the UK, holiday cancellation, ski equipment or piste closure.

You should take a valid GHIC or EHIC where applicable and arrange suitable travel insurance with Winter Sports Cover for your planned activities.

Cover may be available for a range of pre-existing medical conditions. Some conditions are covered automatically when the Policy Wording requirements are met, while other relevant conditions require separate medical screening through Millstream Underwriting Limited.

Customers requiring screening currently need:

  • A Covered2Go travel insurance policy with Winter Sports Cover and the appropriate activity level; and
  • Separate medical screening cover from Millstream

These can be arranged in either order, and you do not need a Covered2Go policy number to begin screening. Any additional medical premium is paid separately to Millstream. Both parts must be in place before you travel.

Read the pre-existing medical conditions information for the complete process.
