What is long stay travel insurance?
Long stay travel insurance is designed for a single extended trip that lasts longer than a typical holiday. It can be suitable for backpacking, gap years, round-the-world travel and longer visits to friends or family overseas.
Long-stay travel insurance is also commonly referred to as backpacker insurance, gap year travel insurance or long-term travel insurance.
Covered2Go Longstay Travel Insurance can provide cover for one extended trip of up to 18 months, depending on the duration selected and shown on your policy schedule.
Unlike Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance, which covers several separate holidays during a 12-month period, Longstay cover is arranged around one longer journey.
Who is Longstay Travel Insurance for?
Longstay cover may be suitable if you are:
- Taking a gap year or career break
- Backpacking through one or more countries
- Planning a round-the-world trip
- Spending several months with family or friends overseas
- Taking an extended holiday or sabbatical
- Travelling for longer than the permitted duration of an Annual Multi-Trip policy
Eligibility
To be eligible, you must be aged 64 or under when you purchase the policy. Cover is available to eligible UK residents and your trip must start and return to the UK. Please check the policy wording for the full residency and eligibility requirements.
What does Longstay Travel Insurance cover?
Emergency medical expenses
Cover includes up to £5 million per insured person for necessary emergency medical and surgical treatment abroad, including repatriation where medically necessary.
Emergency dental treatment to relieve pain is covered up to £500. Search and rescue costs are also covered up to £50,000 following an accident while you are taking part in an insured activity, subject to the requirements and time limits within the policy wording.
Cancellation and curtailment
Cover includes up to £3,000 if you have to cancel your trip for an insured reason and up to £1,500 if you have to cut your trip short.
Cancellation cover begins when your policy is purchased, so it is worth arranging your insurance as soon as you book your trip.
Baggage and personal belongings
Cover includes up to £1,000 for baggage and personal belongings, subject to a £500 single-item limit and a £500 total valuables limit.
Take particular care with phones, laptops, cameras and other expensive belongings. Their value may exceed the policy limits, so check whether you require separate specialist cover.
Travel disruption
The policy includes cover for certain insured travel delays, missed departures, additional travel and accommodation expenses, and uninhabitable accommodation.
End Supplier Failure
Cover of up to £10,000 is included for certain irrecoverable costs following the financial failure of an end supplier, subject to the terms and exclusions within the policy wording.
Personal liability and legal expenses
The policy includes up to £2 million personal liability cover and up to £25,000 legal expenses cover.
Cover limits, terms, conditions, exclusions and excesses apply. Please read the policy wording carefully to ensure the cover meets your needs.
Longstay, Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip: which cover do I need?
| Policy type | How it works | Usually suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| Longstay | Covers one extended trip for up to 18 months for eligible travellers aged 64 and under. | Gap years, backpacking, round-the-world trips and extended stays. |
| Single Trip | Covers one holiday for up to 365 days, subject to eligibility. | One-off holidays and longer trips that fit within the Single Trip duration limit. |
| Annual Multi-Trip | Covers multiple holidays during a 12-month period. Each trip is normally limited to 31 days, with 45 or 60-day extensions available for an additional premium. | Travellers taking several separate holidays during the year. |

Longstay Travel Insurance and pre-existing medical conditions

A range of Level 1 sports and activities is included. Cover for activities within Levels 2 to 4 may be available for an additional premium and must be shown on your policy schedule.

If you intend to work, volunteer or complete a work placement during your trip, please contact us before purchasing your policy.
The type of work and duties involved matters, and hazardous, specialist or certain manual activities may not be covered. Check the Longstay policy wording against your exact plans rather than assuming that all overseas work is included.
