MEDICAL CONDITIONS

Can travel insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?

Yes, cover may be available for a wide range of pre-existing medical conditions following medical screening. Having a medical condition does not automatically mean you will be unable to get travel insurance.

Each traveller’s circumstances are considered individually. An additional premium or special policy terms may apply, depending on the outcome of the screening.

Conditions covered automatically

The current policy automatically covers acid or gastric reflux, acne, blindness or partial sight, cataracts, deafness or partial hearing loss, glaucoma, hay fever, hypothyroidism, IBS and PCOS. These conditions do not need to be declared and no additional premium applies.

When medical screening is required

Except for the conditions covered automatically, you must declare medical conditions for which you have received treatment, advice or medication during the last 12 months. If cover is accepted, an additional premium and medical screening endorsement may apply.

Changes to your health

If you receive treatment, advice or medication for a new condition after purchasing your policy but before travelling, you must tell the Medical Screening Service. Your cover may need to be reviewed before your trip.

Important exclusions

What isn’t covered by travel insurance?

Travel insurance is designed to cover unexpected insured events, but it does not cover every situation. Common exclusions include undeclared medical conditions, known circumstances, travel against official advice and activities that are not included on your policy.

Undeclared medical conditions

Medical claims may not be covered if you have not declared a condition when required, completed the relevant medical screening or told us about a change in health before travelling.

Known events or circumstances

Claims caused by circumstances you knew about when you booked your trip or purchased your insurance may not be covered if you could reasonably have expected them to result in a claim.

Travel against official advice

Cover may not apply if you travel against Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advice or fail to follow official health, safety or preventative guidance.

Unselected activities and upgrades

Higher-risk sports, winter sports, cruises and other optional activities may not be covered unless the appropriate cover has been selected, any additional premium paid and the option shown on your policy schedule.

Alcohol, drugs and illegal acts

Claims may not be covered if they result from excessive alcohol affecting your judgement, non-prescribed drugs, deliberate exposure to exceptional risk or an illegal or criminal act.

Planned or routine treatment

The policy does not cover trips taken to obtain medical treatment or the cost of routine, elective or non-emergency treatment that can reasonably wait until you return home.

This is not a complete list of exclusions

Cover limits, conditions and exclusions also apply to individual sections of the policy. Read the policy wording and your policy schedule carefully to make sure the cover is suitable for your trip.

Travel Insurance FAQs

Travel insurance can provide financial protection against certain unexpected events before or during a trip. Depending on the policy and cover level selected, this can include cancellation, emergency medical treatment and repatriation, lost or stolen belongings, travel delays and other insured events.

Covered2Go offers Silver, Gold and Platinum cover levels across Single Trip Travel Insurance, Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance and Longstay Travel Insurance.

The right type of travel insurance will depend on how often you travel and how long you plan to be away.

Single Trip Travel Insurance is designed for one specific holiday, while Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance can cover multiple eligible trips during a 12-month period. For longer continuous journeys, Longstay Travel Insurance can provide cover for trips lasting up to 18 months, subject to eligibility.

It is generally sensible to arrange travel insurance as soon as you have booked your holiday. This means eligible cancellation cover can begin from the applicable date shown in your policy rather than waiting until shortly before departure.

Always check the policy wording to understand when each section of cover starts and ends.

Yes. Eligible adults and dependent children can be insured together on a family policy, subject to the applicable eligibility requirements and policy terms.

Covered2Go offers Family Travel Insurance with Single Trip, Annual Multi-Trip and Longstay options. Family cover may also offer benefits such as children travelling free when insured with an eligible adult, depending on the policy selected.

Yes, cover may be available for a wide range of pre-existing medical conditions following medical screening. Some specified conditions are automatically covered under the current policy and do not need to be declared, while other conditions must be declared if they meet the policy’s medical screening criteria.

Read our guide to Travel Insurance for Pre-existing Medical Conditions for more information about declaring conditions and medical screening.

The cost of travel insurance varies according to factors such as your age, destination, trip duration, policy type, cover level, medical history and any optional cover you select.

Covered2Go offers Silver, Gold and Platinum options with different benefit limits. You can compare travel insurance cover levels before choosing the option that best suits your needs and budget.

A Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) can provide access to certain state-provided healthcare when visiting participating countries, but it is not a replacement for travel insurance.

A GHIC does not provide the same protection as a travel insurance policy for things such as cancellation, lost or stolen belongings or many travel disruption events. It may also not cover all medical costs or repatriation back to the UK.

You can find more information in our EHIC and GHIC travel insurance guide.

Travel insurance can still be useful for holidays within the UK. Although eligible UK residents can access NHS healthcare, a travel insurance policy can provide protection for other insured events such as cancellation, curtailment and lost or stolen belongings.

For Covered2Go UK cover, your trip must include at least two consecutive nights in pre-booked accommodation. See our UK Travel Insurance guide for more information.

If you are travelling within Europe, you need to select a geographical area that includes every destination on your itinerary.

Covered2Go European cover includes many popular destinations such as Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Turkey and Cyprus, as well as certain other countries and territories defined within the policy.

Read our Europe Travel Insurance guide and check the policy wording for the complete geographical definition before purchasing.

Standard travel insurance does not necessarily include all cruise-specific benefits. Covered2Go allows you to add Cruise Cover for an additional premium.

Depending on the policy terms and cover selected, this can provide additional protection for events such as missed port departure, cabin confinement, skipped ports, shore excursions and cruise interruption.

See our Cruise Travel Insurance page for full details.

Winter sports require the appropriate activity cover to be selected. Depending on the cover purchased, additional benefits can include protection for winter sports equipment, replacement equipment hire, ski packs and piste closure.

If you are planning a skiing or snowboarding holiday, read our Winter Sports Travel Insurance guide before purchasing.

Travel insurance does not cover every event or circumstance. Common exclusions can include undeclared medical conditions, circumstances you knew about before purchasing the policy, travel against applicable Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advice, unselected activities or optional cover, and certain claims involving alcohol, drugs or illegal acts.

This is not a complete list of exclusions. You should always read the Covered2Go policy wordings for the full terms, conditions, benefit limits and exclusions that apply to your cover.

Choose a geographical area that covers your destination and any countries you intend to enter during your trip.

If you are only changing flights in another country and remain airside at the airport, you will not normally need to select a geographical area that covers the transit country, provided the transit does not exceed 12 hours.

If you intend to leave the airport and enter the country during your stopover, you will need to make sure that country is included within the geographical area shown on your policy. A different geographical area may also be required if an airside transit exceeds 12 hours.

You can find more information about the available geographical areas in our Travel Insurance by Destination section.
