From 12 October 2025, passengers travelling by Eurostar from London St Pancras International may be asked whether they have travel insurance before boarding, according to reports in The Independent.
The question is one of four now being asked at new kiosks, installed as part of the EU’s long-delayed Entry/Exit System (EES). The other three questions cover:

Whether the passenger has booked overnight accommodation,

If they hold a return ticket, and
-
Whether they have sufficient funds to pay for their trip.
Why Are Passengers Being Asked About Travel Insurance?
Although the European Union does not require UK travellers to hold travel insurance to enter the Schengen area, French authorities do. Up until now, checks for insurance have been rare, but that may change with the roll-out of the new kiosks.
A Eurostar spokesperson clarified that passengers will be asked about travel insurance specifically, not just medical cover. The translations displayed at kiosks are being reviewed by the French Ministry of the Interior.
Travellers heading to Brussels and Amsterdam via Eurostar will also be asked about travel insurance, as they first enter the EU through France.
What Is the Schengen Area?
The Schengen zone includes most EU countries (excluding Ireland and Cyprus), plus Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. From October, the new EES will begin rolling out across the zone over six months, with kiosks at St Pancras processing certain passengers first.
At St Pancras, 49 booths are already installed and will initially handle business and premium passengers. Eurostar estimates this may add around 10 minutes to the check-in process, so travellers are advised to arrive 75 minutes before departure.
