What is travel insurance?
Travel insurance helps protect you against the unexpected when you travel outside the UK. It can cover emergency medical treatment, trip cancellation, lost or stolen belongings, travel delays and more—giving you peace of mind before and during your trip.
The cost of travel insurance depends on factors such as your age, destination, trip length, the type of cover you choose and any pre-existing medical conditions. If you’re planning to travel more than once in a year, an Annual Multi-Trip policy may offer a convenient option, providing cover for 12 months where each trip is up to 31 days as standard, with extensions available.
Do I need to purchase travel insurance?
Travel insurance is strongly recommended for any trip outside the UK. While most holidays go smoothly, unexpected events like medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost belongings or a stolen passport can be stressful and expensive to deal with on your own—especially in countries where healthcare costs are high.
Having travel insurance in place from the moment you book your trip means you’re protected if something prevents you from travelling. Cancellation cover starts as soon as your policy is purchased, helping you recover costs if you’re unable to go.
Travel insurance can also cover emergency medical treatment abroad, the loss of important documents such as your passport, and delays or disruptions during your journey. It provides peace of mind so you can focus on enjoying your holiday, knowing help is available when you need it most.
What does travel insurance cover?

Cancellation or Curtailment
Cover the expenses of unused and non-refundable travel, accommodation and pre-paid excursion costs in case you need to cancel or cut short your trip.
Personal Possessions
Cover if your bags are lost, damaged or stolen, this would be covered up to the policy limits.
Medical Expenses
Cover financial expenses should injury, illness or death occur during your trip outside the UK.
Transport / Flight Delays
Cover the costs of any delays during your trip.
Emergency Assistance
24/7 assistance should you require medical emergency assistance abroad, repatriation or curtailment while on holiday.
Personal Liability
Legal expenses can be provided if you’re held responsible for causing damages or injury to another person while on holiday.
What type of travel insurance is right for me?
Choosing the right travel insurance policy depends on a few things. Where you’re travelling too, how many times you plan on travelling in the year, whether you need cover for a cruise holiday or a winter sports trip… There are many things to consider.
Here are the most common types of policy:
- Single trip: A travel insurance policy which will cover you for a one-off trip.
- Annual multi-trip: Ideal if you’re taking more than one trip over a 12-month period. This can be more cost-effective than purchasing two or more single trip policies over the year. Our policies allow you to travel for up to 31 days per trip, or for an additional premium, you can extend your trip limit to 45 or 60 days.
- Longstay: Suitable for travellers who choose to go on longer trips, up to the maximum age of 64.
- Worldwide: If you’re travelling to the USA, Canada or the Caribbean, a worldwide policy would be the ideal choice for you. You may find that this type of policy is more expensive than a European policy, however, this is largely due to medical costs outside the EU being much higher.
- Winter sports: If you’re planning on a skiing or snowboarding holiday, you would need to add cover for winter sports to your policy. This cover will provide you with specific winter sports benefits such as, cover for lost or damaged ski equipment. Maximum cover of 30 days per trip on an Annual Multi-trip policy.
- Sports and activities: For those travellers who enjoy sports and activity holidays, we have a wide range of sports and activities available which can be added to your insurance policy (we cover 110 sports and activities, as standard).
- Couples: This type of policy is suitable for two adults, who live at the same address. Please note, couples can still travel independently of one another, if you’re thinking of purchasing an annual multi-trip.
- Family: This provides cover for all members of the family on one policy. Kids (under 18’s, or under 23’s, in full time education and living with you) are FREE on our family travel insurance policies.
- Group: This may be the ideal choice for you if you’re travelling in a group of up to 14 people, friends or family members, all members must be travelling from the UK.
- Business travel: If you’re planning a business trip, you are covered to do non-manual work during your trip under this policy and it can be extended to cover manual work. Business Cover will also protect your business equipment if it is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed. If you are unable to fulfil your business trip, due to illness, we will cover some of the costs for a replacement employee to take over.
- Golf travel: If you’re going on a golf trip, adding golf cover may be the ideal add-on for your travel insurance policy.

Check you are covered before you claim
It’s important to check that you’re covered by your policy before you make a claim. Please read the relevant sections of the policy wording, terms, conditions, and exclusions carefully. Click here for Policy Wordings.
Single Trip & Longstay Policies – The start date and end date of the policy should correspond with the dates of travel. Cancellation cover will become effective on the date the premium is paid and the policy is issued.
Annual Multi Trip Policy – Unlike the Single Trip and Long Stay policy, an Annual policy should start when a holiday is booked (and not the start date of the first trip) so that the pre-travel cancellation cover is in force, as detailed in Section 1: Cancellation of the policy wording. All cover will terminate on the expiry date of your policy, as detailed on your certificate of insurance.
Age restrictions apply to Covered2go policies and are as follows:
- Single Trip Policies: Maximum Age 99
- Annual Multi-Trip Policies: Maximum Age 85
- Longstay Policies: Maximum Age 64
- Dependent Children Age Limit (All Policies): Financially dependent children, aged under 23 years in full time education
NOTE: If you are aged under 16 years at the time of the accident, the death benefit will be limited to funeral and other reasonable costs up to £1,000 and the permanent total disablement benefit will not apply
You should request to go to the nearest public/state medical facility. If in Europe, you should show your EHIC card, as medical treatment will be free or at a reduced cost.
IMPORTANT: The Policy does not provide cover for private healthcare.
Some hotels will urge people to seek private treatment, however, these facilities vary greatly and are not necessarily equipped to deal with all emergencies. They may also give medical attention at over inflated prices.
